Metadata

Metadata is awesome. No, really, it is. Don’t believe me? Look at how much the IDv3 tags help you in searching for your music files in iTunes or Windows Media Player. Without metadata we would be totally reliant on file names, which would then be even longer and more cumbersome than they are now. Metadata is one of my research focuses because I believe that this paradigm of search based on metadata shouldn’t be limited to our music files. This brings up some interesting issues on generating metadata from existing files, etc… but the benefit will outweigh any of the cost involved in making it work. We have a great knowledge base of AI techniques that are being added to every day for facial identification in images, text analysis, music comparison by similar sound patterns, and more and more and more. We needs to harvest these and build tools to let us archive and search our files more robustly. This is the topic of my current research, and I’ll be mentioning more of it and giving more of my ideas as time goes on.
